Sad news

Please see the letter below regarding the sad passing of Ray Tyler.

Before joining Southern Car Club Ray was a member of B&DCC and served on the committee from November 1992 to October 1996.

B&DCC send our sincere condolences go to Sue and family at this very sad time.

    “Hi everyone,

For those I haven’t already spoken to and who haven’t heard through other channels, I’m sorry to tell you that Ray Tyler, Southern Car Club stalwart, regular grafter on Rallye Sunseeker, The Wugging Stages, the Festival of Speed and umpteen other events as Forest Nine, died suddenly on Sunday 4 July.

Ray had just spent five days at his favourite event – the Goodwood Festival of Speed – and only a couple of hours before had been escorting Lewis Hamilton (as he had escorted many other motor sport stars over the weekend) as they signed autographs. He had a heart attack on the A27 Chichester Bypass shortly after leaving Goodwood. Fortunately, his daughter Lou had the presence of mind to turn on the hazard lights and steer the car into a lay-by where she applied the handbrake to prevent what could have been an even greater tragedy.

The funeral arrangements on Monday 19th July are as follows:

Sue, Nick, Emma and Lou have asked that, if you are able to attend the funeral, you wear your brightest motor sport shirts and anoraks as possible. They would love to see as many of Ray’s   friends as possible joining them to celebrate Ray’s life, but to help the family with the catering arrangements, if you are planning to attend, I’d be grateful if you could let me know before the    end of next week.

Finally, Sue and the family have asked that you don’t send flowers – they would rather you made a donation which will go to the Richard Burns Foundation.

    Best regards

    Neil

BDCC returns to its roots......

From Monday 12th October, we have great pleasure in returning to ‘The Dudsbury’, 218 Christchurch Road, West Parley for our club meeting place. Yes of those of you who were members back in the earlier 90’s it the same, though its not the same OLD, as its had a major facelift under the new management. We look forward to seeing you there and thank ‘The Dudsbury’ for inviting us back.

For those newer members you that dont know where it is, here is a Multimap link and instructions below.

From Hurn or Bournemouth :-

If your heading towards Wimborne from the Parley Cross traffic lights, travel up the hill and just as you go round the right hand bend nearing the top, turn immediately left after the field into the lane (watch speed bumps) and when the road forks, take the left into the carpark.

From Wimborne or Poole :-

If your heading towards Parley Cross from the Haskins roundabouts, travel up the hill pass Dudsbury Golf Club, then The Horns Pub and The Owls Nest Pub. Just as you start to go down hill toward the lights, turn immediately right before the field into the lane (watch speed bumps) and when the road forks, take the left into the carpark.

On a sad note

PETER COOPER

1922 – 2009

The Committee of Bournemouth & District are saddened by the death of Peter Cooper who passed away on Saturday 28 March 2009, at the BEN home in Sunningdale, aged 86.

Peter spent more than 50 years in motor sport, including six years as MSA Chief Executive (from 1982 to 1987) and was a long-term member of the Motor Sports Council, including a spell as chairman (from 1982 to 1985). His achievements included finishing second overall on the 1954 RAC Rally, Chairman of the Kart Committee, a Steward of vast worldwide experience, and membership of the FIA World Council for many years and FISA Vice President d'honneur. His glorious career was officially recognized last year, with the Motor Sports Association's Lifetime Achievement award.

Colin Hilton, current Chief Executive of the Motor Sports Association, said: "Peter demonstrated an unrivalled commitment to the sport over many, many years, having held almost every possible post in that time. Perhaps his greatest achievement, however, is that he remained known, well-liked and greatly admired throughout motor sport by all those who came into contact with him, right through from club and national to international and World levels. He will be greatly missed."

On receiving his Lifetime Achievement Award last year, Peter said: "When I look back, I can say with confidence that if I'd spent half as much time on my business as I did on motor sport, I would have been a lot richer, but a lot less happy.”

Peter was one of the stalwarts of Bournemouth & District Car Club and served as their president for many years. Peter was always the gentleman, and held in high regard and respected by all that had the pleasure of knowing him, and was until only last year acting as a Club Steward at many Club events, but even though his health suffered, no one was able to pull the wool over his eyes!

He will be sadly missed by all of us at BDCC and our sincere condolences go to Sally and Peters’ family at this very sad time.
