Summer Sizzler News
B&DCC ran its first Car Gymkhana on 20th July 2019. Twenty- two club members took part in events that included an ‘egg and spoon’ race, balancing a ball on a bonnet whist driving around a set course and, (worst of all for me), driving whilst blindfolded with a passenger navigating you around the cones. Fortunately, the weather was kind to us and, apart from some gusts of wind blowing the ball off of bonnets, everyone achieved all of the tests with only minor damage. (I managed to run over a cone at the finish line after taking off the blindfold!) Overall winner of the Gymkhana was Graham Hoare.
The evening saw a large number of people camping out, enjoying a barbeque prepared by our resident chef, Colin, and having a chat over a few drinks. We even had music and lights, kindly provided by Adie.
The more serious event, the Summer Sizzler Slalom, was held on the Sunday. After a brief shower in the morning, the grass was a little slippery and some of the competitors struggled to control their cars (especially those with rear wheel drive). However, the grass dried out later in the morning and there was some impressive driving.
FTD went to Clive Evans in his trusty Ka (recently repaired after damaging the suspension at Bovington). It was also brilliant to see four lady competitors win awards. Hopefully this will encourage more ladies to take part and show the men how to do it! A full list of results can be found on the club website.
Thanks go to Michael who designed the tests and was entries secretary, Chloe for being in charge of the results, Jason for finding the venue and the landowner for allowing us to use his field. Lastly a special thank you to the marshals who put up with the rain and scorching sunshine throughout the day.
We hope to hold two similar grass events at the same venue next year and look forward to seeing you all there.
